Hats Off To These Two 14 Year Olds Who Put Swaziland On The Map – For The Right Reasons

When I was in high school I decided to join the science club to invent things. I only got as far as winning 3rd place at the national level for a simple circuit based quiz for kids. You put a card with a question in and picked one of the three choices. A bulb lit up depending on your choice (Trust me it was not as awesome as it now sounds). It wasn’t the best thing ever. Unlike what Sakhiwe Shongwe and Bonkhe Mahlalela have done.

These boys from Lusoti High School are the future. They are exactly what this country needs. Sure when the won the award, print media tried to make us take note but let’s face it, you probably miss the story. That’s exactly why we are bringing to your attention.

Sakhile and Bonkhe won the Science action award for coming up with a solution to make hydroponic farming more affordable for poor subsidence farmers in Swaziland. Don’t ask me what that is, I was never good at agriculture. What I gather from watching the video is that they simply found a way to help farmers get a better yield under the current drought situation engulfing the country.

Allow me to say hats of as well to their science teacher Mr. Sithole. These are the teachers we need to help groom young talent that will rise up and change how the future looks for Swaziland.
